June 11th-Important Events in History

Every single day is connected to the past. Not a day goes by that there isn't an anniversary of some event in history. Whether it be a battle, a victory, a birth/death day of an historical figure, or the invention of a new technology, every day has something new that you can learn about.

Today, I'm going to talk about some things that happened on this day in history: June 11th.

On the topic of historical birthdays, Jacques-Yves Cousteau (pictured above) was born on this date in 1910. Cousteau was a French inventor and explorer. He also did things in ecology, writing, photography, film, and research. He specialized in the subject of the ocean, studying the sea and its inhabitants. Cousteau was a co-developer of the aqua-lung, which was one of the first underwater breathing systems.

Another interesting thing that happened on this day in history involves the infamous Alcatraz Island. On June 11th, 1962, the only successful escape from the prison took place. John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris spent nine months chiseling a tunnel through the cement wall in their cell (pictured above). Once the tunnel was completed, they put fake bodies in their bunks, got on a rubber raft, and headed towards San Francisco Bay. Now, there is a lot of controversy on whether or not the prisoners ever made it to San Francisco Bay, but there is no way to prove or disprove it; it will always be a mystery.
